Fight against premises liability claims related to escalators

On Behalf of | Aug 10, 2018 | Firm News, Premises Liability

Escalators provide an easy way for mobile individuals to get from one floor of a building to another. These are often used in conjunction with elevators that can help disabled people get to those different floors. For the men, women and children who take the escalator, it is imperative that they take proper safety steps. These can help to prevent accidents that might maim, injure or kill.

One thing to do is make sure that they know that they can’t have any loose clothing that might be caught up in the moving parts. Securing loose clothing, such as floor-length, flowing skirts, is necessary to avoid them being snagged and pulled along.

Make sure that they don’t try to carry too much on the escalator. Leave one hand free to hold the railing as they ride the machine. This means that they will need to hold everything in one hand to remain safe.

They must not bring any hand carts, strollers, scooters or wheelchairs with them. If they have any of these, go use the elevator.

Never try to go in the opposite direction of the escalator, so don’t go up the down escalator or down the up. They should hold onto the handrail as they get onto the step. Riders must watch their feet as they get on and off. They don’t need their shoes to get caught up in the claw teeth at the top and bottom of the escalator.

Sometimes, children or even adults might play or act in an unsafe manner on the escalator. Fighting possible lawsuits in these cases might be difficult but it isn’t impossible.
