How can I avoid accidents with pedestrians?

On Behalf of | May 21, 2020 | Car Accidents

When most Americans think of an automobile accident, they picture two cars crashing into each other. However, pedestrian-vehicle accidents are very common in the US.

Vigilance on the part of the pedestrian and the motorist is key. Pedestrian safety is a major concern: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a pedestrian died every 88 minutes in 2017 due to a traffic crash.

In a crash between a pedestrian and an automobile, the automobile always wins. This is why it is extremely important for pedestrians to keep their safety in mind. First of all, if there are sidewalks available where you are walking, make sure to use them. It is also a good idea to wear bright colors, particularly if you are walking at night. If it is very dark outside, you may want to consider bringing a flashlight. The flashlight is more to make you visible to motorists as opposed to helping you to see your way.

If you are crossing at a crosswalk, never assume that the driver actually notices you. Particularly in areas where motorists can turn right on red, often they are paying more attention to the road and then potential pedestrians. Always make eye contact with motorists before crossing.

Make sure to take an extra moment before you back out of a parking spot or your driveway. This is a common cause of pedestrian accidents. Following the speed limit is of prime importance, particularly if you are driving around a school or playground or area where there may be many pedestrians.
