What are signs of a traumatic brain injury?

On Behalf of | Jun 6, 2020 | Car Accidents

New Jersey residents who get into car crashes often experience head trauma. These injuries can cover a wide range. Some may cause temporary impairment. Others result in a lifetime of disability.

Today, we will look at traumatic brain injuries. Also called TBIs, these injuries often impact drivers the hardest. They can cause suffering for a long time to come. But early identification can streamline the healing process.

Signs of mild TBI

Mayo Clinic discusses some of the signs of traumatic brain injuries. Within TBIs, there are mild, moderate and severe degrees of injury. Even the mildest form of a TBI still has serious repercussions for your health. Some of the signs of mild TBIs include:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Fatigue or drowsiness
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Inability to sleep or sleeping too much
  • Loss of balance or dizziness

Signs of moderate to severe TBI

For moderate to severe injuries, the symptoms are even more pronounced. They include:

  • Seizures or convulsions
  • The draining of clear fluids from the mouth or nose
  • Numbness or weakness in fingers and toes
  • Loss of consciousness that can last hours

Regardless of symptoms, seek the help of medical professionals as soon as possible. Often, the best medicine for a TBI is rest and recover. But some injuries are severe enough to need medical intervention. For example, if the brain swells too much due to a TBI, procedures may happen to reduce pressure in the skull. This can help limit the possibility of long term brain damage. But this can only happen if you notice the symptoms and take quick action.
