When it comes to traffic safety laws, the penalties and restrictions vary from one state to the next. According to the Federal Communications Commission, there is not a nationwide ban on phone use or texting while driving at this time. However, texting while behind the wheel is against the law in 48 states and Washington D.C. Regrettably, some negligent drivers ignore these laws and text while driving.

Understanding state laws on all phone use behind the wheel

In 21 states (and D.C.), it is against the law for all drivers to use handheld phones while operating a vehicle, according to the FCC. Moreover, 20 states have passed laws that prevent school bus drivers from using their phones while on the road. With respect to inexperienced drivers, all phone use on the road is against the law in 39 states and D.C. As a result, some drivers do not realize that phone activity which is legally permitted in one state is against the law after crossing state lines.
