3 things never to do in the wake of a vehicular accident

On Behalf of | May 26, 2021 | Car Accidents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention classifies vehicular accidents as one of the top causes of death among individuals between the ages of one and 54 in the U.S. According to the National Public Radio, in spite of the fact that there were significantly fewer automobiles on the road in 2020 than in previous years, the number of fatalities attributed to road incidents actually rose.

Even those who practice proper safety precautions may find themselves involved in a wreck. It is important to avoid certain actions in the aftermath of a crash.

1. Dismiss injuries as insignificant

One of the biggest mistakes individuals may make after an accident is to assume they are not badly hurt. It is imperative to seek medical attention as soon as possible, no delays, no understating the extent of the harm done. Internal wounds are not immediately visible. Some injuries take longer to present symptoms and may even result in death days after if not treated. Even non-deadly ones may become more severe if not cared for in a timely fashion, slowing down recovery and possibly leading to complications later on.

2. Agree not to contact the police

New Jersey law requires drivers to report accidents to the authorities. One party may try to persuade the other not to call the police, but this is illegal. Failing to report an incident may also complicate attempts to file a claim.

3. Accept the blame

Even if they believe they are at fault, motor operators may want to avoid admitting it right after a wreck. This includes apologizing. If an investigation reveals that the other person bears some of the responsibility, having “confessed” earlier may make it difficult to obtain any compensation.

Not doing certain things after a vehicular accident may save drivers trouble later on.
