Pedestrians can’t assume that drivers will see them

On Behalf of | Jul 20, 2021 | Car Accidents

Pedestrians are at risk when they’re near the roads because many drivers simply drive too fast, don’t pay attention or aren’t looking for pedestrians in the area. A simple mistake by the driver could end up causing a serious or fatal pedestrian collision. In fact, in 2019, 6,205 people were killed in pedestrian collisions. That works out to around one death every 85 minutes for the entire year.

Although drivers have a responsibility to watch out for pedestrians, those who are on foot can help avoid a collision with a negligent or reckless driver by being predictable, obeying traffic laws and walking on sidewalks whenever possible. Some additional tips that may help you and your family stay safe while walking include the following:

  • Use crosswalks or intersections to cross the street when possible
  • Walk where the street is well-lit
  • Walk facing traffic, so that you can catch the drivers’ attention more easily and see them coming
  • Watch out for vehicles entering or exiting driveways and parking lots
  • Don’t assume any driver sees you. Always make eye contact or wave

How can drivers keep pedestrians safe?

Drivers should focus on keeping pedestrians safe by staying alert. They should put down their devices and make sure to pay attention to the road and to what’s going on around them. Slowing down, looking for pedestrians near parked cars and intersections and obeying traffic laws will all help prevent serious crashes.

These tips may help you be safer on the roads or when you’re walking in parking lots or other spaces. If you or a loved one has been struck by a driver, don’t settle for less than the compensation you deserve.
