Some of the deadly wrecks that occur on the nation’s interstates happen due to congested traffic during peak commuting hours and minor fender-benders. But there is additional collateral damage from these slowdowns, like truckers running far behind schedule on their routes from these delays.
When that occurs, those same truckers are forced by their companies to make up the time. That can cause speeding and Hours of Service (HoS) violations, which in turn can be the catalyst for horrific semitruck accidents.
A new alert system may prevent some problems
Recently, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner made an announcement that a roll-out of a new traffic alert system for truckers will be in real-time. Semitruck drivers covering all the major New Jersey highways and interstates will get alerts miles before the beginning of the traffic congestion.
This can potentially save lives by allowing the big rig drivers to slow down well before their speeds could lead to a collision.
Partners collaborated with the system development
A company focused on transportation analytics and data collaborated with a technology service supplier to build a system for commercial truckers called Drivewyze PreClear. Truck drivers using the system will get these alerts of trouble ahead in time to avoid the worst-case scenarios.
Will the system reduce traffic deaths?
That remains to be seen, of course, as no one has a crystal ball to predict the future. But anything that makes New Jersey’s highways safer has to be a positive factor.
