What makes night driving more dangerous?

On Behalf of | Mar 7, 2023 | Car Accidents

Night driving is often considered to be more dangerous than driving during the day. This is the reason that young drivers are often restricted in their night hours before they are given a license. It takes time to develop these skills.

But what is it about driving at night that makes it so much more dangerous? There are numerous factors, so let’s consider a few below.

More drunk drivers

One reason is simply that you’re sharing the road with a higher percentage of impaired drivers. This isn’t to say that DUI accidents and arrests don’t happen during the day or even in the morning. But many of them happen late at night or in the very early morning hours, such as around 2:00 AM.

Reduced visibility

Naturally, driving at night also means that you’re dealing with reduced visibility. That sometimes leads to mistakes when drivers don’t see a stop sign, for instance, or when they don’t notice a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

More fatigued driving

Finally, those who drive at night need to remember that the body’s natural rhythm is going to make fatigue more likely when it’s dark outside. This is even true for those who have tried to get some sleep during the day. Not only does this mean that the driver themselves is at risk of nodding off behind the wheel, but even an alert driver could be injured in an accident caused by someone else who is overly fatigued.

If you have been injured in one of these crashes while driving at night, be sure you know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills and other costs.
